Monkfish is the English name of a number of types of Monkfish (Angler fish)fish caught in the northwest Atlantic, most notably the species of the anglerfish genus Lophius.

A round bodied seawater fish found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, that has a very large, ugly head. Usually sold without the head, the tail contains only one cartiligous bone that is easily removed. The tough outer skin is easily pulled off and the clear membrane removed from underneath. The flesh is firm and meaty and lends itself well to hard cooking methods as well as being combined with strong flavoured ingredients. Monkfish can also be bought smoked.
